Battle of the Blancos: Tasting Tequilas from Los Altos

Los Altos, the highlands of Jalisco, is renowned for producing some of the finest tequilas in the world. Rich in tradition and flavor, these tequilas showcase the region's unique terroir. To celebrate this richness, we embarked on a blind taste test journey, featuring three acclaimed brands: @tequilaocho, @eltesorotequila, and @sieteleguastequila. Each brings a distinct character and essence to the table, offering a captivating exploration of taste for any tequila aficionado.

The Contenders

  1. Tequila Ocho: Known for its single-estate philosophy, Tequila Ocho uses a roller mill in its production. The brand emphasizes the intricacies of terroir, with each batch highlighting different ranchos, capturing the unique essence of the agave.

  2. El Tesoro: A true emblem of traditional methods, El Tesoro is tahona-crushed, creating a tequila that pays homage to age-old practices. This method imparts a distinct richness and complexity to its blanco tequila.

  3. Siete Leguas: Balancing tradition and modernity, Siete Leguas employs 50% tahona and 50% roller mill processing. This blend results in a tequila that captures the best of both worlds, offering a harmonious and well-rounded flavor profile.

The Blind Taste Test

Taking on a challenge both exciting and difficult, we conducted a blind taste test of these three blanco tequilas, each priced between $50-$59. Our palates were eager to discover nuances, venturing into a delightful mosaic of flavor profiles.

Despite sharing a highland origin, each tequila brought forth distinct characteristics that spoke to the methods and philosophies behind their creation. It underscored the notion that even within a geographically unified region, diversity and individuality reign supreme.

The Verdict

Choosing a winner proved more challenging than anticipated. Each tequila was unique, surpassing expectations in different ways:

  • Tequila Ocho distinguished itself with its vibrant agave soul and terroir-focused profile.
  • El Tesoro offered a rich, complex tapestry driven by its tahona-crushed origins.
  • Siete Leguas delighted us with its balance and multidimensional character, marrying the old with the new.

Ultimately, the decision of which tequila reigns supreme is left to personal preference and palate. This tasting experience not only broadened our appreciation for Los Altos tequilas but also highlighted the elegance and nuances each brand delivers.
